Fish

With nearly one thousand intensive facilities, Italy is today a particularly strategic area in the fish farming sector. Thanks to its geographic position, its environmental features and a consolidated tradition, Italy is a primary reference for the farmed fish market in terms of both production and consumption.
40,000 tons of salmonids, 18,000 tons of sea basses, sea breams and white sea breams, and over 4,000 tons of other fish (sturgeons, ictaluridae, eels, etc.) represent today’s first-class production. Furthermore, Italy is one of the countries with the highest consumption of sea basses and sea breams and is thus observed with particular interest by all the major fish farmers on the Mediterranean coasts.
Italian fish feed manufacturers are in turn interested in seeking new export prospects in neighbouring countries.
To this specific market open across all the Mediterranean, Veronesi offers specific, highly specialised products for all needs. Specifically, our fish feed plant in Quinto di Valpantena (VR) adopts high-tech extrusion processes and uses certified GMO-free products ensuring traceability and a certified supply chain.

Salmonids

Crystal-clear water from mountain streams or springs in the plains is the essential element for salmonids farming.
A nearly century-old tradition, handed down from father to son, characterised by experience and innovation has developed top-quality trout for food (white-flesh and pink-flesh rainbow trout) and reintroduction to rivers and lakes (brown trout, brook trout and marble trout).
From replacement using fertilised eggs supplied by specifically specialised plants and through the various fish farming steps (hatchery, pre-fattening and fattening), fish ready for the market are obtained over a 14 to 20 month period.
The various fish farming techniques include the supply of feed using manual or automatic systems and the constant monitoring of the size and growth rate of the fish.
Salmonids farming today requires highly differentiated feed according to the age of the fish, the features of the farm and the temperature of the water. For this reason, we provide crumbled products and micro-pellets for hatchery, medium-size feed for pre-fattening and large-size feed (up to 6/8 mm) for the various fattening steps and for breeders. High-energy content feed for farms with temperature-controlled systems and large amounts of available oxygen in water, medium-to-low energy content feed for systems in which the water temperature varies significantly and in which oxygenation is not optimal are available. The choice also include floating feed for shallow ponds and sinking feed for very deep ponds.

Sea fish

Sea basses, sea breams and white sea breams - and today on the rise the umbrina, the common pandora and the greater amberjack, etc. - are the “forte” of Mediterranean aquaculture.
Production is constantly increasing in Italy, as in all the countries around the Mediterranean sea. Demand for consumption is on the rise and fishing restrictions buffer the significant increase in fish farming production without severe market repercussions, even though the trend suggests the need to err on the side of caution.
Starting from housings of young fish weighing 1 to 3 grams produced in specialised centres, this type of fish farm generally involves the pre-fattening and fattening steps in sea cages or ponds. Production cycles may be longer than 24 months in total, especially if the water is not particularly warm or if the aim is to produce large-sized fish (over 800 – 1000 grams).
Various feeding strategies are developed using much less differentiated feed with respect to salmonids, particularly in terms of specific weight (only sinking feed is used) and in terms of energy level (nearly only medium-to-low energy content feed is employed). Requirements in terms of product size according to the size of the fish are however the same. The choice of raw materials in the formulation tends towards top-quality protein and lipid sources.

Other productions

The production and consumption of eels has always been high in Italy. The production is however gradually decreasing mainly due to the significant reduction in the fishing of wild leptocephali and elvers (eels are indeed the only fish which cannot be reproduced in captivity). Despite this, we offer eel feed in powder for making wet mixtures and extruded products intended for dry use.
The sturgeon farming trend is instead markedly opposite: this sector is experiencing powerful growth, particularly in relation to the increased demand for caviar worldwide. Specific diets for growing and fattening sturgeons, and specifically for caviar producing females, further qualify Veronesi’s fish feed range.
Lastly, the range includes products for domestic catfish, American catfish, carps and tenches.
